Morality vs Calamity

Maulana Tariq Jameel, one of the renowned preachers in Pakistan and a prominent member of the Tableeghi Jamaat, recently got embroiled into a controversy during Prime Minister's telethon. In the telethon, Maulana took the liberty to label the entire media as liars and opportunists who would twist the facts to their own advantage. Media, being the powerful industry it is, and Maulana, for being the wise man he is, came to a truce where Maulana apologized for his remarks and termed it as a mere 'slip of the tongue'. I won't ramble much about the media issue, but a round of catharsis is due for Maulana calling women's 'Be-Haya-ee' as the cause of the pandemic. The anchors had their own ax to grind, but it was shameful that they didn't ask Maulana to clear his stance on the issue of women's morality.  A cursory perusal of the ancient history shows that women often held power and were regarded the same as men. From Greek mythological characters...

Life in the Time of Corona

Image
These past few  weeks  have been daunting all around the  globe .  A minuscule bug, with a size in nanometers, has taught human beings about how vulnerable our species is, about the extent of our oblivion and how we should not take  the 'Mother  Earth' for granted.   Economies  have  collapsed , the  recession  has crept in, healthcare setups have  collapsed ,  uncertainty  has slithered into our  routine  lives, but despite all of this,  COVID19  has  failed  to founder  human  resolve.   Human  Resolve has grown nothing but stronger in this  crisis , and that' s  because our genetic code is programmed so as to  fight  in the  face  of  adversity ,  expound  the intricacies of any  enigma  we  face , and above all, to never capitulate in  hardship . Quarantine has  made   us   rea...

Mysticism and 'Forty Rules of Love'

The books we read help us shape our lives and change us in how we see life. Our thoughts are molded according to author's imagination but it's necessary for the reader to always be a critic of what he/she reads. Whether you agree or disagree with the message presented in 'The Forty Rules of Love' by Turkish author Elif Shafak, it is one of those books to have a profound impact on the reader whatsoever.  'The Forty Rules of Love' is a poetic and riveting novel with two parallel narratives. One takes place in the 21st century depicting the life of an unhappy woman Ella Rubenstein, while the other takes place in the 13th century where the world renowned scholar Rumi encounters a wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz. Sufis in the Islamic world have always been considered heretics with their harrowing interpretation of religion. Although fictional, this book has done a great job in depicting the Sufi teachings and Sufism . This novel is phenomenal and influential...

Excursion to Astore-Deosai Plains

Image
While you are in Gilgit-Baltistan, one of the must places worth seeing is valley of Astore, home to the famous Deosai National Park. Astore is one of the ten districts of GB with a moderate climate during summer, and extreme cold during winter. While in Gilgit City, friends planned to visit  Deosai Plains and the Archmaester who planned this trip from scratch was our dear friend Wazir Waqar alias Baba/Baby, and Waqar being a native of Astore acted as the best tour guide.  Deosai plains is accessible either by Astore or Skardu and we chose to travel by Astore. Our journey began on 2nd day of Eid and we departed early in the morning at 6:00am from Gilgit city. The excitement was at peak for it was the first time we were travelling to Astore-Deosai except for Waqar. Our Wolfpack included me, Waqar , Junaid, Ubaid and the legendary Zahid aka Barfaani Cheetah (Snow Leopard). The funny thing is that Zahid hails from Astore too, but this was his first visit to this beautiful distr...

Tour de Gilgit-Hunza

Image
As the Eid- ul - Fitr  2017 vacations approached close, I had two options; either visit home or take a tour to the North. Hardly getting a week's  vacation from the dreaded House Job, I decided that  the  prudent  choice to beat the heat of Lahore and the exhaustion of endless medicine duties would be a visit to the exuberant valleys of  Gilgit  and  Hunza .  We contemplated about either flying to  Gilgit  or travelling by road, but the best way to devour the natural scenery is by road and thus began our journey to  Gilgit  and  Hunza . Our first stop was for lunch at Naran and this little valley was flooded with tourists as usual. After an hour's drive from Naran, awaits the majestic  Lulusar  lake.   Lulusar Lake The next stop is the  well-known   Babusar  Top at an elevation of 13,690ft. We stopped for almost an hour at this place, clicked a few snaps and started o...
